The history of Belgium radio stations is a shaky one as it was influenced by World War II. That said, the government began issuing licenses for private broadcasts much earlier than some other countries in 1930. The first overall radio station was broadcast in Belgium’s Royal Palace in Brussels in 1923. Following that, Radio Belgique was a popular station before the war.
During the actual war, radio broadcasting was heavily restricted by the German occupiers who controlled the airwave. This is a sort of dark period for the radio scene, however, once the war was over radio broadcasting resumed. The country expanded its scene to public broadcasts. RTBF and the Dutch-speaking VRT were two of the most popular stations in the 1950s and 1960s.
With the dawn of the 1970s and 1980s private commercial radio stations began to surface offering tons of formats. Today, there are over 70 commercial radio stations in Belgium operating daily. They include national and regional stations in a variety of languages including Dutch, French, German, and English. They reflect Belgium’s linguistic diversity but also the variety of formats people like to enjoy like music, news, and talk-shows.
